Kauai Trivia
1
Kauai has served as a popular filming location for over 60 movies and many TV shows, including “Jurassic Park” and “Gilligan’s Island.”
2
The island’s natural features take precedence over man-made. In fact, there is a building code that states no structure can be taller than a coconut palm tree (about four stories).
3
70% of Kauai is accessible only by foot, so make sure to bring your comfortable walking or hiking shoes!
4
You may see chickens and roosters roaming free all over the island. The destruction of Hurricane Iniki in 1992 left coops open, and the birds have multiplied freely since.
5
Kauai’s Waimea Canyon is sometimes known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, measuring 1 mile wide, 3,600 feet deep and 10 miles long.
6
True to its nickname as the Garden Island, about 90% of Kauai is used for agriculture or conservation.
7
Kauai is home to the largest coffee plantation in the U.S., and it produces more taro—a staple Hawaiian root vegetable—than any other island.
8
Kauai has 111 miles of coastline and more beaches than any other island.
9
Mt. Waialeale is famously the wettest place on Earth, getting a yearly rainfall of over 450 inches and creating an environment that supports rare plant species.
10
Kauai’s Wailua River is the only navigable river in Hawaii (meaning it’s safe to take a boat on).
